In the 1806 March 24 letter to Nicholas, Jefferson intimates that he wishes to appoint Nicholas as the third commissioner to France together with General [John] Armstrong and Mr. [James] Bowdoin to negotiate for the purchase of West Florida. Nicholas is to represent the interests of the southern states. In the 1806 July 11 letter Eppes, Jefferson writes that he has heard nothing from Paris, Commodore [John] Rogers reports all quiet in the Mediterranean, a road is being built from Athens to Ft. Stoddart, and that the newspapers have falsely reported danger from Indian hostilities.
